Overview

The desktop is the centric element of the Audiotool. You use it to create devices, connect them and modulate their sound.

  1. pointer - You can use the pointer to navigate around the desktop. Click on its surface and drag the mouse to pan around. To move a device, drag and drop it to a new position. You can also use this tool to select a device by clicking on it. If you want to select multiple devices you can hold the Shift key down. Once multiple devices are selected you can move them in a group.
  2. marquee tool - This tool allows you to select multiple devices with a rectangular selection. You can also hold shift to make multiple selections.
  3. cue - With the cue tool you are able to listen to a single cable or slot. Simply hover with the mouse over an input or output slot and you will hear only the signal going through it. The same applies for cables.
  4. hand - The hand tool allows you to navigate quickly because you can click anywhere on the desktop, even on devices or knobs, to pan around.
  5. zoom - Use the zoom slider to get a better overview of the devices and connections. You can also use your mouse wheel to zoom in or out.
  6. lock - The lock will disable any desktop controls. You can not modify the position of the devices or make any connections. This is useful if you are happy with your setup and focus only on sound modulation.
  7. device name - This is where the name of the device is labelled. NOTE: The Master Output is a unique device because you are not allowed to delete it or change its name.
  8. input - Input slots are how the devices can be routed together, output cables go into inputs…

Making A Connection

To create a connection you need at least two devices. The Kobolt was added to the Desktop by dragging it from the devices panel to the desktop.

  1. device name - The name of devices (apart from the master output) can be changed by double-clicking on the device name.
  2. output - Outputs slots are where input cables can be routed. Output cables go into inputs…
  3. delete device - Allows for the device to be deleted from the setup.

(below) Example shows the Kobolt's output cable of the being plugged into the Master Output

Solo

As well as the Cue Tool it is also possible to set a single cable into a permanent state of solo, this makes it possible hear only what is going through the selected output cable. This can be very useful in a busy setup since it means that you can concentrate on working on one specific part of your arrangement at a time. This can be done by first clicking once with the mouse over the output you want to play Solo to reveal the context menu and then clicking Solo.

The context menu can be summoned almost anywhere within the audiotool desktop by clicking once with the mouse, the menu's options will change depending on where and on what you click on to reveal it.

The above example shows the output of the Bassline Machine being routed through a Tube distortion effect pedal and then into a Kobolt mixer, before going from the mixer into the Master Output. Note that in the above example the solo feature is being used on the output of the Bassline Machine before it goes into the effect pedal, this means that audiotool will only be playing the sound made by the Bassline Machine and not any of the devices that come after it in the processing chain. If you wanted to hear the sound of the Bassline machine after it had been routed through the Tube effect pedal then the solo feature would need to be utilised with the effect pedal's output. Once you have set a slot into solo state the Solo Indicator will show you which slot is currently active. You can disable solo by going back into the slots context menu and unchecking Solo.
